Places vs Plotline: plan on any device vs an iPhone-only app

Updated July 11, 2026

Plotline and Places both turn TikToks, Reels, and links into pins on a map. The real differences are who can join and what happens once the places are saved. Plotline is an iPhone-only app with a swipe-to-plan day feature. Places runs on the web, iPhone, and Android and is built around planning together in real time. Here's an honest look.

Where Places wins

  • Works on the web and Android, not just iPhone. Places runs in any browser and on iPhone and Android. Plotline is iPhone-only today (Android is a waitlist, and there is no web app), so anyone in your group on Android or a laptop is left out.
  • Built for planning together. Several people edit the same Places map live, with a note and a color on every spot. Plotline started as a solo app and only recently added shared collections; collaborative trip planning is still listed as coming soon.
  • Vote to decide as a group. Everyone votes on places right on the map to surface the spots the group actually wants. Plotline has no voting.
  • Share a public map link, no app needed. Send a read-only link anyone can open in a browser, no download and no iPhone required. Plotline sharing lives inside its iOS app.

Where Plotline wins

  • Imports from YouTube and Google Maps lists. Plotline also pulls places from YouTube videos and from a shared Google Maps saved list. Places imports TikTok, Reels, and articles today, but not YouTube or Google Maps lists yet.
  • Sidequests, a swipe-to-plan day. Plotline's Sidequests lets you swipe through saved spots and nearby picks and auto-builds a route for the day. Places has no same-day auto-planner.
  • A polished single-platform app. By focusing on iPhone only, Plotline is a very smooth native app with strong ratings and fast early momentum.

Which should you choose?

If your group is all on iPhone and you want a polished solo saver with a swipe-to-plan day, Plotline is a strong pick. If anyone uses Android or plans in a browser, or you want to decide together and vote on one live map, Places is built for the whole group.
